Ellick was the son of Rhina and brother of Shadrack. He first appears in the historical record in the 1832 will of Zachariah Lamar, when he and his family were bequeathed to Mary Ann. As there was at least one other Ellick on the Hurricane at the time, it is not possible to determine which of the two ran away to John B. Lamar’s home in August 1837 to complain about the “unmerciful” violence carried out by the Hurricane overseer.
