Riny Lamar

Riny Lamar (also referred to in various documents as “Rhina,” “Rino,” and “Rinor ”) was the daughter of “Old” Charles and Seny Walker. She first appears in the historical record in Zachariah Lamar’s 1832 will, when she was bequeathed to Mary Ann. She was mother to at least eight children, including two babies who died shortly after their births in 1839 and 1840. Riny was literate and wrote to her mother at Swift Creek in June 1839 that, “I write to inform you that I lost my baby last Tuesday was a week a go . . . . If you can possible do so you must let me hear from you all soon.” Fifteen months later, the overseer at Hurricane Plantation wrote to Howell to note that “Rinors child died last wednesday night.” Riny was still laboring as a field hand at the Hurricane in 1859. She was listed in the plantation book for that year alongside a large number of her children and grandchildren.
