Ellick Walker
Ellick Walker was the son of “Old” Charles and Seny Walker and husband to Clarissa. He was born around 1815 and first appears in the historical record in the 1832 will of Zachariah Lamar, when he and his family were bequeathed to Mary Ann. Ellick and Clarissa were the parents of James, Burton, Cassandra, Charles Lucius, Seaborn, Susan, Sabina, Clarissa, Alexander, Isabella, and Jefferson. They all lived at the Hurricane Plantation, putting them in close proximity to Clarissa’s mother in Milledgeville. As there was at least one other Ellick on the Hurricane at the time, it is not possible to determine which of the two ran away to John B. Lamar’s home in August 1837 to complain about the “unmerciful” violence carried out by the Hurricane overseer.
If it was him, he never lost that spirit of resistance. Immediately after emancipation, “Old Ellick” conspired with his brother-in-law Wilkes Flagg to recruit freedpeople from the Cobb-Lamar plantations in Sumter to work for shares on Flagg’s newly-established Baldwin County plantation. Howell angrily reported, “That miserable creature Wilkes Flag sent Old Ellick down to get negroes from [overseer] Nathan Barwick[’s] place. Old Ellick staid out in the woods & sent for the negroes, & they were bargaining with him in the night and telling Barwick in the day that they were going to stay with him. The moment they got their money, they started for the railroad.” By the 1870 U.S. Census, he referred to himself as “Alec” and gave his profession as clergyman. His last appearance in the historical record is the 1880 Census, where he referred to himself as “Alexander Walker;” he and Clarissa remained in Baldwin County.
